SAN DIEGO COUNTY FAIR
In the ribbons: Pinto Jaxen

June 26, 2008

Judges' choice: A photo of a cow taken by San Carlos resident Pinto Jaxen, 8, earned him the Coady Family Award in the Kids' Best Division. He said he took the photo of cows behind a fence by attracting them with grass so they would walk over to him. He said the cows loved having their photo taken, adding, “You could see the way they smiled.”

Background: Pinto loves going to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, where he said he collects rocks, hikes around, climbs rocks and explores caves. He enjoys taking photographs of things like “dead turtles and stuff.”

How he got started: Last year, Pinto's mother showed him how to use a camera, and he took photos of his grandmother's horses.

Comment: “I like having to go to places and take pictures.”

Tip for learning more: Take pictures of things you like, Pinto said.
