EVENTOS LATINOS
Best bet • Marco Antonio Solís: Focus on his music

June 26, 2008

Marco Antonio Solís rarely gives interviews.

Some say he's grown temperamental, others that he's forgotten his roots.

Although there's some truth in those criticisms, perhaps the main reason is that every time he appears on celebrity TV shows reporters ask him about his personal life.

Did he already meet his grandson? Is he having problems with the wife? Does he support the children he has with different women? Does he still have issues with his former colleagues in the disappeared band Los Bukis?

DETAILS
Marco Antonio Solís

When: Tomorrow, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Cox Arena, San Diego State University

Tickets: $68.75 to $98.75

Information: ticketmaster.com

But when he performs at San Diego State University's Cox Arena tomorrow, the focus will be his music.

It will be Solís center stage, singing the ballads he's composed.

What will matter is that he's able to connect with people who have followed his musical career since he started with Los Bukis more than 30 years ago in his native state of Michoacan, in southwestern Mexico.

Solís, who is known as El Buki, began his latest tour in South America but it includes several U.S. cities as well.

In May, he was selected as Songwriter of the Year by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) for his contribution to Spanish-language music in the United States, where he has lived for several years.

Solís is one of the most important singer-songwriters in Latin music. Artists such as Rocio Durcal, Ana Barbara and Enrique Iglesias have recorded his songs.

Early this month his label, Fonovisa, released a live album titled “Una noche en Madrid,” which was recorded during his tour in Spain last year.

But his personal life has been the bread and butter of gossip shows, especially regarding his marriage and divorce to singer Beatriz Adriana.

In concert, though, it will be Solís and his fans, who most likely will singing their hearts out with him.
