LA MESA: The eighth annual Summer Healthcare Saturday will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grossmont Center shopping center, 5500 Grossmont Center Drive in La Mesa – on Saturday, of course.
There will be free screenings for health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Information will be available about nutrition, body fat, earwax, hand problems, laser eye surgery, chiropractic care, sleep disorders, acupuncture, osteoporosis, home safety, herbal supplements, fitness, hospice care and health insurance. Participants can also learn about senior housing, home-care services, nutrition services, volunteer opportunities and careers in medicine.
More than 50 exhibit booths are expected to be set up near the movie theaters. Event sponsors include the San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce, the Grossmont Healthcare District, Sharp Grossmont Hospital and Grossmont Center. The Chamber is organizing the health fair. Conservation garden extends Wednesday hours
RANCHO SAN DIEGO: The Water Conservation Garden in Rancho San Diego is extending its hours every Wednesday through Aug. 31.
The garden, normally open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, will be open until 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. The longer hours will allow residents to take advantage of summer nights in the garden, where they can picnic, stroll or learn about a variety of plants.
The five-acre garden showcases water conservation methods through themed areas. It features a number of benches along the pathways, a Children's Discovery Trail and interactive exhibits. Admission is free.

San Miguel fire district gets grant for education
SPRING VALLEY: The San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District has received a $25,000 grant to help educate the public about wildfire prevention.
District residents living in wildfire-prone areas will receive a DVD about wildfire prevention, including topics such as creating a defensible space around their home, planning for an evacuation and how to successfully recover if a home is destroyed in a fire.
The grant came from the California Fire Safe Council through Farmers Insurance.
