San Diego's jazz scene ebbs and flows with the times – the city's a 'microcosm' of the nation

One step forward, one step back, another step forward and another one back. If the San Diego jazz scene had an official dance, that would be it – a cyclical series of steps that represent both progress and regression, triumphs and setbacks. This month alone has witnessed several landmarks, including the 20th anniversary of the acclaimed Jazz at the Athenaeum concert series at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla and the first anniversary of Anthology, downtown San Diego's dazzling live-music supper club.

    Stars come out for City Ballet's Summer Intensive classes

    She was one of her generation's leading ballerinas, a partner of Mikhail Baryshnikov, who wrote about her drug addiction, eating disorders and more in a startlingly candid autobiography, “Dancing on My Grave.” And next month, Gelsey Kirkland comes to San Diego in the role of teacher.
