No fine expected for unwatered lawn
SACRAMENTO – A couple who stopped watering their front lawn last month have been cited for creating a public nuisance and could be fined $746. Anne Hartridge and Matt George said they let their lawn die after the governor declared a statewide drought on June 4.
A city official said the dead lawn violates a city code requiring front yards to be irrigated, landscaped and maintained. The husband and wife said they bought their home in east Sacramento so they could bike to work and shops. They have solar panels, efficient appliances and dry their laundry on a clothesline.
After an outcry when the couple's story became public, city officials told the Sacramento Bee yesterday that the couple probably won't be fined, the newspaper reported on its Web site.

State Senate OKs foreclosure-aid bill
SACRAMENTO – Lawmakers yesterday sent Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger a bill requiring more notice from lenders seeking to foreclose on homeowners.
The legislation by Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata and Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, both Democrats, passed the state Senate yesterday. It requires mortgage holders to provide a 30-day warning before filing a default notice, which typically precedes foreclosure. It also gives tenants at least 60 days to move out of a home that is being foreclosed. Schwarzenegger spokesman Aaron McLear said the governor expects to sign the bill.
