ROUNDUP
Giambi, Yanks rout Rangers

ASSOCIATED PRESS

July 3, 2008

Jason Giambi hit a grand slam and drove in a season-high six runs and Alex Rodriguez added a three-run homer as the New York Yankees avoided a series sweep with an 18-7 rout of the Texas Rangers.

The host Yankees scored just seven runs and batted .172 in losing three of their last four games.

Rodriguez scored four times, the last coming on his line-drive homer to right during the Yankees' season-high nine-run seventh inning. It was Rodriguez's 535th homer, moving him past Jimmie Foxx for 14th on the career list and one behind Mickey Mantle.

Milton Bradley and Chris Davis hit two-run homers for the Rangers, who are 0-7 this season after taking the first two games of a three-game series. Josh Hamilton drove in two runs.

Edwar Ramirez (2-0) picked up the win in relief for the Yankees.

Derek Jeter's run-scoring single in the eighth gave every Yankees starter a hit. Seven New York players drove in runs, including Brett Gardner with his first career hit in the seventh.

TWINS 7, TIGERS 0: Nick Blackburn combined with two relievers on a five-hitter, and Joe Mauer's two-out, two-run single sparked a five-run third inning that led surging host Minnesota over Detroit. Minnesota took two of three from the Tigers and has won 13 of its past 15 games.

ANGELS 7, ATHLETICS 4: Joe Saunders pitched into the seventh inning to match Brandon Webb for the major league lead with his 12th win, and Juan Rivera and Eric Aybar homered for host Los Angeles.

ORIOLES 5, ROYALS 2: Daniel Cabrera pitched a seven-hitter to earn his first victory since May 20, Aubrey Huff homered and host Baltimore beat Gil Meche and Kansas City. Cabrera (6-4) retired 13 straight batters before David DeJesus singled with two outs in the eighth inning.

WHITE SOX 6, INDIANS 5 (10): A.J. Pierzynski led off the bottom of 10th with his second homer of the game and host Chicago won its seventh straight. Masa Kobayashi (4-4) pitched a perfect ninth then Pierzynski drove the first pitch of the 10th for his seventh homer.

RAYS 7, RED SOX 6: Evan Longoria went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs as host Tampa Bay beat Boston to complete its second three-game sweep of the World Series champions this season. Boston matched a season high with its fifth consecutive loss.

MARLINS 4, NATIONALS 2: Alfredo Amezaga hit a go-ahead, two-run home run in the seventh inning when play resumed after a 1½-hour rain delay, and host Florida beat Washington.

PHILLIES 7, BRAVES 3: Ryan Howard hit a three-run homer and Pat Burrell added a solo shot as visiting Philadelphia survived a ninth-inning scare to beat Atlanta. The Phillies improved to 5-0 in Atlanta this season and 7-1 overall in the season series. The Braves (40-45) fell a season-worst five games under .500 with their second straight loss in the series, despite homers from Chipper Jones and Ruben Gotay.

PIRATES 9, REDS 5: Xavier Nady homered twice and drove in four runs to lead visiting Pittsburgh. Denny Bautista (1-0), obtained in a trade with Detroit last week, got the victory in relief of John Van Benschoten, who gave up two homers to Jay Bruce.

CARDINALS 8, METS 7: Troy Glaus' second homer of the game with two outs in the ninth won it for host St. Louis, an inning after pinch-hitter Chris Duncan's two-run shot tied it in the Cardinals' victory over the New York Mets. Glaus' fifth career game-winning homer came off rookie Carlos Muniz (0-1), a towering drive that barely cleared the left-field wall. Rick Ankiel hit his 17th homer in the fifth and flied out to the wall in center field before Glaus' at-bat. Ryan Franklin (3-2) worked a perfect ninth for the Cardinals.
