July 3, 2008

NOTABLE

The Los Angeles Dodgers optioned rookie left-hander Clayton Kershaw (0-2, 4.42 ERA) to Double-A Jacksonville.

Pirates Closer Matt Capps will be sidelined for approximately eight weeks after an MRI exam showed bursitis and tightness in his shoulder.

Reds shortstop Alex Gonzalez is scheduled for surgery Monday on his left knee, which has sidelined him all season.

BY THE NUMBERS

10-2 Marlins' record against the Nationals this season.

WHO'S HOT

Xavier Nady

Homers twice (solo and two-run shot), hits a run-scoring single and drives in four in Pirates' win over the Reds. The outfielder has hit safely in his last 12 games at Great American Ball Park.

WHO'S NOT

Eulogio De La Cruz

Marlins again send struggling pitcher – 0-0, 16.26 ERA in three appearances – down to Triple-A. He was part of offseason trade with Detroit for Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera.

QUOTABLE

“When you've played as long as he has, if he stays healthy you're going to get something like that.”

– Cardinals manager Tony La Russa on Troy Glaus, whose second homer of the game came in the ninth with two outs
