NL WEST
How low can division go?

ASSOCIATED PRESS

July 3, 2008

The first-place team in the NL West dropped below .500 last night.

Mike Cameron singled home Russell Branyan with one out in the ninth inning to lift the Brewers to a 4-3 victory over the Diamondbacks in Phoenix.

Arizona (42-43), which was 20-8 on May 1, has lost eight of 11.

Cameron went 2-for-4 with two RBI to help Milwaukee rally from a 2-0 deficit.

In the ninth, Branyan reached on an error by Mark Reynolds, who was making his first career appearance at first base. Gabe Kapler sacrificed Branyan to second and Cameron followed with a sharp single to left off closer Brandon Lyon.

Arizona had two runners thrown out at the plate.

DODGERS 4, ASTROS 1: In Houston, Hiroki Kuroda threw seven shutout innings after coming off the disabled list and Jeff Kent had two RBI doubles to help L.A. coast.

CUBS 6, GIANTS 5: In San Francisco, Mike Fontenot hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth and Jim Edmonds also homered for Chicago, which has scored 16 runs in its past three games.
