'Big Lemon' turns 80
The city of Lemon Grove will celebrate the 80th birthday of “The Big Lemon,” the city's iconic, 3,500-pound lemon at Lemon Grove Avenue and Broadway, with two events. A ribbon-cutting – complete with free lemon drops, lollipops and balloons – will be at 10 a.m. today in front of the lemon. A lemon-themed English high tea will be from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the H. Lee House Cultural Center, 3205 Olive St., Lemon Grove. Cost: $15 per person. INDEPENDENCE DAY
The city of El Cajon will hold its annual Fourth of July Picnic & Fireworks Celebration tomorrow at Kennedy Park, 1675 E. Madison Ave., El Cajon. Hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and soda will be sold starting at noon, along with kettle corn, nachos and shaved ice. Inflatable jump houses will also be there. Cool off at the Parkway Pool at 385 Park Way in Chula Vista. Built in 1955, the outdoor pool is 33 meters by 25 yards and has two 1-meter diving boards and handicapped access.
