Weekend Best Bets: South County

July 3, 2008

INDEPENDENCE DAY

Throughout San Diego County, hundreds of thousands of people will celebrate Independence Day with parades, barbecues and fireworks. In South County, there will be fireworks at 9 p.m. tomorrow at Kimball Park in National City, accompanied by the National City Community Concert Band. Carnival rides, games and food booths will be open at various times through Saturday. A parade will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday. Information: (619) 336-4290. For a list of other fireworks displays, see Page 4.

SUMMER SWIM

The Parkway Pool at 385 Park Way, Chula Vista, is a perfect place to chill for the summer. The outdoor pool, built in 1955, has two 1-meter diving boards and disabled access. A variety of programs for youths, adults and seniors, and the intimate nature make the pool a favorite of lap swimmers. Cost: adults, $3; children/seniors, $2. The pool has dressing rooms and shower areas. Information: (619) 691-5088.

Lemon Grove will celebrate the 80th birthday of “The Big Lemon,” the city's iconic, 3,500-pound civic symbol at Lemon Grove Avenue and Broadway. The event, including free lemon drops, lollipops and balloons, will begin at 10 a.m. today in front of the lemon. Information: (619) 460-4353.

The classic PG-rated film “The Sandlot” screens at dusk Saturday at Jess Martin Park, 2955 state Route 79, Julian. Bring a picnic dinner and a blanket. Free. Information: (760) 765-0650 or sdparks.org.

Naturalist Jack Pomeroy will present “Red Diamond Rattlesnakes,” a lecture and four-mile hike over Boulder Loop and Rock Ridge Trail, at 8 a.m. Saturday. Meeting point is the La Honda Drive parking lot at Daley Ranch, Escondido. Free. Information: (760) 839-4680.

The San Diego Symphony Summer Pops presents Marvin Hamlisch Leads A Star-Spangled Pops! at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow through Sunday at the Embarcadero Marina Park South, near the Convention Center. $15 to $80. (619) 235-0804 or sandiegosymphony.com.
