Lux schedules a new slate of resident artists The inaugural season of artist residencies at the Lux Art Institute in Encinitas has featured excellent exhibitions that have yielded some stellar new work by Tomás Rivas, Astrid Preston, Julie Heffernan and Daniel Wheeler. In fact, Wheeler will complete his residency this week (he'll be on-site during gallery hours from Thursday through Saturday) and his show continues until Aug. 2.

Breaking out of the film-curator box Understanding Rebecca Webb starts with the answer to a simple question:
“What is a film curator? That's a good question,” said Webb, the founding film curator for UCSD's presenting organization ArtPower! “A lot of people – when I'm here, anyway – say, 'Oh, do you work in a library or something?' ”
- Get ready for Act II of the Ranchita Rocks festival
Ranchita Rocks is back.
The three-day music festival, which debuted last year as a fundraising concert for community and environmental groups opposed to San Diego Gas & Electric's proposed Sunrise Powerlink electrical transmission line, is returning with several national headlining acts and an emphasis on solar, biodiesel and wind energy to power the event. Headliners include earthy jam-band favorites Yonder Mountain String Band, DJ Bassnectar and hard-rocking Woodstock veterans Mountain, of “Mississippi Queen” fame.
