IN THE RIBBONS: JON PETERSON

Judges' choice: Jon Peterson's light ale, called Kolsch, earned him a Best of Show. He describes his recipe as an ale originally made in Cologne, Germany, that is brewed at cooler temperatures.

Background: Peterson, a dentist with a practice in Hillcrest, is a Poway resident. He said he has been home-brewing for about 12 years and is a certified beer judge.

How he got started: A friend doing home-brewing asked him to help.

Comment: “It was good beer and I knew it, but best of show is always a surprise. There was a lot of tough competition.”

Tip for learning more: Join a home-brewing club such as QUAFF or read books about basic home-brewing.
