Crash that killed man cleaning pool still probed

STAFF WRITER

July 6, 2008

EL CAJON

On a Monday morning 12 weeks ago, Kevin Vicary was cleaning his pool when a semitrailer crashed through his backyard fence in El Cajon and killed him.

The chain-reaction accident April 14 was triggered by a motorist in a van who ran a red light at Granite Hills Drive and Washington Avenue, witnesses told police.

The investigation into the fatality has gone from the El Cajon Police Department to the county District Attorney's Office and back again.

District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis' staff requested more work by investigators, a spokesman said last week.

The district attorney eventually will decide whether to file charges against the 50-year-old El Cajon woman who was driving the van.

Steve Shakowski, an El Cajon police spokesman, confirmed Tuesday that the department was still working on the case, but said he did not know when it might be finished.

“We're working with the county (accident) reconstructionist right now, and we're going to resubmit the case to the District Attorney's Office,” Shakowski said. “We're just dotting some i's and crossing some t's for them.”

The California Highway Patrol also helped with the investigation by checking for possible mechanical problems with the tractor-trailer, officials said.

The accident occurred about 10:45 a.m. at Granite Hills Drive and Washington Avenue, police said. The woman, behind the wheel of a white Ford Windstar van, drove into the path of the semitrailer, heading west on Dehesa Road, which becomes Washington Avenue as it crosses Granite Hills Drive. The big rig plowed into two other cars and then into Vica-ry's backyard.

Vicary, 38, a father of three, was knocked into the pool, but his 2-year-old daughter was spared.

After the accident, there was an outpouring of community support for Vicary's wife, Isabel, and the couple's three young daughters.

A memorial fund was established for the Vicary children. Anyone wishing to donate can send a check to: The Kevin Vicary Family Memorial Fund, 1st Pacific Bank of California, 343 E. Main St., El Cajon, CA 92020.
