Violence in Mosul:Iraqi special forces killed one militant and detained eight others in an operation against al-Qaeda in Iraq yesterday in the northern city of Mosul, 240 miles north of Baghdad, the U.S. military said in a statement. The man had attempted to detonate explosives strapped to himself before being shot dead. Also yesterday, militants shot dead two off-duty policemen in a market in eastern Mosul, police said. And a roadside bomb killed one person and wounded six others including two policemen when it targeted a police patrol in northern Mosul, police said.

Baghdad bombing:A bomb attached to a car killed two people and wounded eight others on Friday in the Yarmouk district of western Baghdad, police said yesterday. Also in the city, two bodies were found Friday, police said. Yesterday, a roadside bomb targeting a police patrol wounded one policeman and one civilian in the Karrada district of central Baghdad, police said.

Death toll:As of yesterday, at least 4,113 members of the U.S. military have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
