NATION UPDATE
Woman, 91, freed from under her car

July 6, 2008

GREENDALE, Wis. – A 91-year-old woman who had crawled under her car to look for her keys ended up stuck beneath an axle for two days until her mail carrier noticed letters piling up, police said.

Betty Borowski of the Milwaukee suburb of Greendale was found Tuesday and remained in a hospital in critical intensive care yesterday, her niece Nancy DiMarco said. Borowski, who lives alone, became stuck June 29 while looking for her keys. Her head apparently got pinned by the axle, Greendale Police Chief Rob Dams said.

Firefighters lifted the car with a jack and removed Borowski, who was dehydrated and confused. It turned out her keys were in the car door.

Unexploded fireworks force beach closure

WANTAGH, N.Y. – A popular Long Island beach was evacuated yesterday on a busy holiday weekend because unexploded fireworks washed up on shore.

About 2,000 visitors were ordered to leave Jones Beach after the leftover shells were found around midday yesterday. State officials said the fireworks apparently came from a barge used to launch a show Friday night. The beach is set to reopen this morning.

Jones Beach State Park, about 30 miles from Manhattan, is a summer haven for New York City residents and Long Islanders. It drew a record 506,000 people over the three-day Memorial Day weekend, but the July Fourth weekend has been rainy.

Baltimore to host ship commissioning

BALTIMORE – For the first time in nearly a quarter century, a major naval warship will be commissioned in Baltimore.

The $1.3 billion missile destroyer Sterett recently left its shipyard in Maine for a month of testing at sea.

The Sterett took four years to build and is among the Navy's most modern destroyers, equipped with vertical missile launchers and torpedoes and capable of fighting simultaneous battles in the air and on the water, the Navy said.

Gospel singer hurt, wife killed in crash

LOGANTON, Pa. – Gospel singer Timothy Wright was critically injured in a crash in central Pennsylvania that killed his wife and a wrong-way driver who hit their vehicle, police said.

Wright, 61, was injured Friday night along with his 14-year-old grandson, D.J. Wright, and both were taken to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, a hospital spokesman said.

Timothy Wright has released more than a dozen gospel recordings, and his latest album, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,” came out last year. He is the pastor at Grace Tabernacle Christian Center in New York City. The Wrights were returning from a Church of God in Christ conference in Detroit, a church spokesman said.
