The San Diego Union-Tribune

NL Chatter

July 6, 2008

NOTABLE

The Rockies placed shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on the 15-day disabled list with a cut on his right hand. Tulowitzki missed 46 games earlier this season because of a left quadriceps tendon tear. The shortstop sliced his right palm when he pounded his bat into the ground in frustration and it shattered. The accident occurred Friday night after he was replaced by Omar Quintanilla in the seventh inning against the Marlins.

Pirates starter Tom Gorzelanny was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis, a day after the lefty gave up five runs in the fifth inning in a 9-1 loss to the Brewers.

Dodgers right-hander Brad Penny is expected to be out through the All-Star break after shutting down a simulated game yesterday with more pain in his shoulder. Penny has been on the disabled list since June 15.

BY THE NUMBERS

46,865 Attendance at last night's Cubs-Cardinals game, a record for the three-year-old Busch Stadium.

10 Hits for Cubs' Derrek Lee in his past 20 at-bats.

WHO'S HOT

Mark Loretta

Ex-Padre hits three doubles and drives in four runs in the Astros' victory at Atlanta.

WHO'S NOT

Ryan Tucker

Marlins starter surrenders eight runs to Rockies in four innings on seven hits and three walks.

QUOTABLE

“It looks kind of stupid, but I understand why he did it. He's a competitor.”

– Rockies catcher Yorvit

Torrealba, on Troy Tulowitzki's

anger-induced injury
