Save it!

Tips for spending less and living better

Avoid city centers: In a city like Chicago, with a good public transit system, you can save money by staying near O'Hare Airport and taking the CTA train into the Loop, USA Today suggests. To avoid sticker shock in New York City, stay near LaGuardia or Newark airports and take public transit into the city. In smaller cities, where parking is less expensive, it's cheaper to stay in an outlying area and rent a car. With a car you can also avoid being prisoner to overpriced restaurants that take advantage of captive tourists and conventioneers with no wheels.
