A magnitude-5.4 earthquake rattled Southern California at 11:42 a.m. Tuesday. It was felt from Los Angeles to San Diego, and as far east as Las Vegas, 230 miles away. About 30 aftershocks quickly followed, the largest at 3.8.

Deputy in assault case tries to commit suicide SAN DIEGO: A San Diego County sheriff's deputy who was arrested last week on suspicion of sexually assaulting a prostitute was being treated at a local hospital after attempting to commit suicide Friday, authorities said.
