Ken Griffey Jr. thanked Cincinnati Reds fans yesterday for their support during his nine seasons in his hometown, and apologized to them for his throat-slash gesture toward a critical broadcaster last weekend.

“My biggest regret is that we were not able to win a world championship while I was there,” he said in a statement.

 The Cardinals released former Padre Matt Clement, who has struggled to return from shoulder surgery in 2006. He had been pitching in Triple-A.

The Cardinals also announced that outfielder Chris Duncan will undergo surgery tomorrow for a herniated cervical disk, ending his season.

 The New York Mets put outfielder Marlon Anderson the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring and called up Daniel Murphy from Triple-A New Orleans.

Strikes out nine Braves, gives up two runs in 8 1/3 innings, is now 5-0 with a 1.88 ERA in six starts with the Brewers.

Braden Looper

Cardinals starter doesn't pitch badly, gives up only three hits in seven innings . . . but two are solo homers in 2-1 loss.
