The San Diego Union-Tribune

Padres review

August 3, 2008

TURNING POINT

After a single in the seventh, the Giants' Fred Lewis stole second base despite a good throw from catcher Josh Bard. The next batter, Giants RBI leader Bengie Molina, slapped a single to right, scoring Lewis and breaking the scoreless tie.

KEY FACTOR

The Padres left seven runners on base – including three in the sixth inning. Kevin Kouzmanoff flied to right (the second time in four at-bats he'd left the bases loaded), ending San Diego's best scoring chance.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

Offense:  Lewis notched two hits and had a crucial steal to set up and score the first run of the game.

Pitching:  Looking like the 2002 AL Cy Young Award pitcher the Giants signed, Barry Zito out-dueled reigning NL Cy Young winner Jake Peavy. Zito yielded three hits to pick up his sixth win. In his longest performance this year, he went eight innings and struck out five. He even singled in the eighth.

Defense:  Giants second baseman Emmanuel Burriss had a nifty diving catch in the first to rob Tadahito Iguchi of a slap single to right. Burriss also turned a quick double play on Iguchi in the third despite a low toss from shortstop Ivan Ochoa.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

Giants manager Bruce Bochy, former skipper of the Padres, said he doesn't have any extra incentive or motivation to beat his former employer. The Padres were 14-4 against Bochy and Co. last season, but are just 3-7 against San Francisco this year. The team's youth movement, Bochy said, is what he's focused on.

“That was two years ago,” Bochy said. “We're just trying to focus on one game. We've had our struggles and we're not very happy with where we are at. We want to take a look at some of the younger kids and see how they perform.”

WHO'S HOT

Emmanuel Burriss: Hot glove, two hits and an RBI single in the ninth rounds out a solid performance.

WHO'S NOT

Tadahito Iguchi: In first game back since going on the disabled list June 6, Padres second baseman goes 0-for-4, including grounding into a double play and two strikeouts.

BY THE NUMBERS

2 Nontraditional double plays for the Padres defense. A nonforce double play during a sacrifice bunt attempt from Barry Zito and a strikeout/throw-out.

14 Combined runners left on base by the teams.

3 Times the Padres have been shut out by the Giants this year, in 10 games.
