The San Diego Union-Tribune

Jeff Siegel's analysis

August 3, 2008

FIRST RACE – STATHY tipped his hand when finishing a sharp second in a fast heat in his debut last month and a similar effort today should be good enough for a maiden diploma. DON'T FORGET MUQ has been burning up the track in a.m. drills for his debut and should come out flying. He's the one to fear most. ALREADY WILD also has worked like he's got some talent and is worth a look. Long shot: Got Free.

SECOND RACE – STORM BRAVE comes off a game win in a similar race, figures to be on the pace again and retains Gomez. He rates a slight edge in a tough affair. PROFESSNL COURTESY, a close third vs. 'Brave last time out, should enjoy a good pace prompting trip outside and figures in the battle once again. SOUTH BAY SCOTY, a route to sprint play, has a look from off the pace and with clear sailing could produce the last run. Long shot: Nene.
THIRD RACE – THE BIG ONE, second off the claim for Sherlock, is overdue for a win and looks capable of producing the last run in a typical grass grab bag. SOUPY, first off the claim for Sadler, should be in the battle but is just 3-for-41 lifetime. HOIST THE SAIL figures to make the running and if not pressured early could take these a long way. Long shot: Pathbreaking.
FOURTH RACE – PROUD GARRISON bids for her third straight win and looks capable of another score despite being double jumped in class by Mullins. She should enjoy an ideal pace stalking trip outside. IN DADDY'S HONOR adds blinkers, drops a notch and is strictly the one fear most. STATELY APPEAL, first off the claim for Sise, has a look from off the pace as she shortens up and returns to the main track, but must overcome the rail. Long shot: Perfect Cast.
FIFTH RACE – FOUL PLAY is seeking his fourth straight win and just won from the rail at Hollywood Park. He's got good early speed but doesn't need the lead to win. JACK'S KID hits hard at this level and should be within striking range throughout. RETURN OF THE KING, freshened and dangerous, should be part of the pace throughout. Long shot: Scottish Diamond.
SIXTH RACE – SPUN SILVER has been burning up the track in morning drills for Baffert and looks fit and ready to score at first asking. MONTANA FIELDS is the best of the known element and rates a big look if she draws into the field. SCARBOROUGH FAIR is bred to be quick, has winning connections and is worth a look in an open, unclassified field. Long shot: Hey Feathers.

SEVENTH RACE – SCAT THIEF, first off the claim for Mitchell, has been freshened since early June and seems set for a smasher. He gets Bejarano and may be able to produce the last run. WILD BUDDY should be on or near the lead throughout and the old timer is always tough to run down. SUPER STRUT beat a softer field in game fashion and should be competitive on the raise for new trainer Cecil. Long shot: Hockey the General.
EIGHTH RACE – BLACK MAMBA looked good winning the Beverly Hills 'Cap and there's no reason she can't come right back and win again. SOLVA, second to 'Mamba at Hollywood Park, looks like a logical exacta partner right back. RANSOM CAPTIVE beat a softer field in good style with continued improve could get a piece of it. Long shot: Foxysox.
NINTH RACE – DIZZY UP THE GIRL missed as the favorite last time out but shouldn't miss today. If she breaks running from the rail, she should be long gone. IF NOT FOR YOU is improving with racing and looms the one to fear most. TIZZALATING drops again in class and may improve enough to hit the board. Long shot: Gabby's Hen.
Best bet: Black Mamba (8th).
