Green living

December 6, 2008

Looking for a thoughtful gift that thinks about the environment, too? Here are some suggestions from I Love a Clean San Diego, a local nonprofit group dedicated to environmentally friendly practices.

Try a nontangible gift like a certificate for a local activity or an experience. How about giving someone a certificate for rock climbing at the Solid Rock Gym in Old Town? A one-day pass, including harness rental, costs $20 for adults and $18 for children under 16.

Make eco-friendly transportation an option at night, too, by giving someone a bike light, says Pauline Martinson, executive director of I Love a Clean San Diego. One option is the Planet Bike Blinky 3 LED Rear Light, available at shop.pedigreen.com for $14. You might also want to look into a reflective vest like the Performance illumiNITE Vizi Bib, available at performancebike.com for around $20.

Another option is a membership to a community-supported agriculture organization to bolster local organic farmers. A monthlong trial membership at Be Wise Ranch in Escondido costs between $120 to $140, depending on the size of the family. For more information, go to bewiseranch.com or call (760) 746-6006.
